Ethical lapses distract U.S. workers

It seems to me that ethical lapses are a huge problem that many people do not know about. This became evident after reading the opening paragraph which included several shocking statistics. I believe that these lapses need to be of a higher concern since they friction, dissonance, and distractions at the work place. The article states that Americans are split in their decision to deal with these distractions, whether by themselves or through their manager. If I was in a situation with such distraction, I would really hope that it would not impact my daily work. This is why I would contact my manager as a solution immediately. I also feel that the survey conducted is a great way to try and target the root of the solution.

Web writing vs. Paper writing

Two major ways that people express themselves are writing on the web and writing on paper. I believe that these two forms of writing are similar in the fact that people still have to state their feelings and opinions no matter where you physically write them. I think they are different in the fact that writing on the web can be quicker and easier than writing on paper because of the ease of several tools such as spell check and the backspace key. When transfering a document formally read on paper to the web, you must consider the format and style of the paper because articles will appear different when presented on the web.

Carolina Cup

Since this week is a free write, I will talk about the 2008 Carolina Cup. This horse race tailgate frenzy took place Saturday in Camdon, SC. It was a very long day which began at 5:30 for me. I made my date and me chocolate chip pancakes and mimosa's for breakfast. We then drove several hours and had the best time ever. I wore a bow-tie for this event and it looked fantastic. Overall it was a fantastic day but I believe it was not worth the amount of money I spent. Maybe if the weather wasn't so poor it would have been more worth while.

My favorite presentation

Hands down my favorite presentation was done by Lindsey Carney. I love hard boiled eggs but always seem to screw them up. Now that I have the perfect recepie, I will never waste any more eggs. I feel another thing that I should discuss in my blog for this week is how well our group bonded at our group meeting on Saturday. We met at Lindsey's apartment and finished our required work. Soon upon completion, we thought that it would be a fantastic idea to extend our meeting several hours. Since we finished our work we decided that the only other activity that we should partake in is beer pong. Lindsey, her roomate, Michael and myself battled it our for several hours. Lindsey was my partner and Michael was with Anita. I believe we played 5 games, and I only won one of them. Overall I would say that I shouldn't get credit for these losses because my partner sucked. Lindsey I love you but your form needs a lot of work. Thank you for reading my blog and I can't wait until our weekly meeting next week.

Mock Interview

Last Friday I conducted my mock inerview. After finally finding the correct room in Tillman, I became very excited about the job at task. The questions that Angie asked were pretty basic and I feel that I did a fairly good job in answering them. The toughest part of my interview was the fact that I already got the job several days prior to this mock interview. Overall it was a fun assignment and I feel better prepared for future interviews.

Free Write

Since this weeks blog topic is a free write, I decided to discuss what I did this weekend. This friday I went downtown to watch my friend's band play at a bar. It was a lot of fun; the crowd was awesome and the music was even better. Saturday was a long day as we tailgated from noon until 6 PM. We played, we drank, we ate, and it was a blast. Saturday night was pretty low key because my friends and I were very tired from tailgating all day. Due to this, we watched American Ganster on my new TV. On Sunday I slept until noon, went to Peppino's for lunch, and then did a major cleaning of my room. I live in a Fraternity house and somehow it gets very dirty, very often. Overall it was a great weekend and I had a lot of fun.

Cover Letters

After reading all the advice for writing cover leters, there was several peices of information that I agreed with, and several things that were new to me. For example, I never realized that your cover letter should be about the company, the prosepect, the target, not about the writer. Furthermore, I learned that most employeers only read the cover letter after reading the resume if they were impressed. One last piece of information that I found useful is to never mass e-mail your cover letter and resume. This makes sense becaue all you are really doing is signing yourself up for rejection letters. The most influential section of this tutorial and the one that will help me the most when writing my cover letter was the article titled "The best use of a cover letter." The biggest thing I learned here was that the cover letter should cover two important points: (1) what your product can do for your customer (the company), and (2) what your customer will need to do to buy your product.

Interviewing

After reading all the articles related to job interviews, I feel more confident that I have all the necessary resources needed to be successful. There are several things in particular that I feel helped me with the interviewing process. First was the article about how to deal with interview stress. This articled focused on the importance of getting to your interview 10 at least 10 minutes early, use your imagination to stay calm, and relax becasuse a relaxed job candidate is a confident job candidate. A second article that really caught my attention is the 10 biggest interview killers. I already feel pretty confident with my interviewing skills so I thought this article would benefit me by simply making sure I am steering away from major mistakes. Several of these killers to avoid are not knowing your aim, lousy nonverbal communication, making incorrect assumptions, and not asking specific questions.

Persuasion

The article that I read is located on the following website http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-greenstein01dec01,0,7372215.story. It talks about the ongoing controversy of the effectiveness of the BCS system in Division 1 college football. This article is a great example of a persuasivness article. The strongest point of persuasion that this article uses is that the writer compares the BCS system to all other professional sports postseasons. It states how the BCS system is unique and cannot be ran similar to another sports postseasons. This article is similar to the MLK article "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" as well as the presentation from the US Army members that we had last week in class. All three of these pieces of persuasion have several things in common. For example, each piece uses descriptive examples and details to support the positive aspects of what is trying to be persuaded. On the other hand, I believe there is a difference between the BCS article and the MLK/Army presentation. To me, the BCS article seemed more of an opinion article than of one that presented facts. The MLK and Army presentation definitely stated opinions, but I believe the majority of the persuasiveness came from facts.

My life in ten years

Fortunately for me, my future is farily predictable. This is due to the major I have already chosen here at Clemson University. My current major is in PGM (Professional Golf Management). A requirement for this major is to graduate with 17 months of internship experience. Furthermore, each internship is broken up so it is possible to work at different golf courses. The last two summers I worked at two different golf facilities and I enjoyed my experience at both of them. I believe this is what I will be doing 10 years from now. I wish to have a house somewhere warm (Florida or on the coast in SC or GA), and be a Owner/GM of a private golf and country club. At this point in my life I will be 30 years old. I believe I will have found the girl of my dreams by then. I will probably be married but most likely will not have any kids yet. I do not wish to be too old to start having kids, but making sure my career and the career of my wife are both stable are of high importance. This is a pretty specific description of my life in ten years but I at least guarantee I will be involved in the golf industry.

Web 2.0

First of all, this was an impresive video overall. It really opened my eyes to what exactly the web is being used for today. I believe that the title of "Web 2.0" means that the internet is entering its second generation of how it is being used. Instead of shopping and conducting research, the internet is proving to be the number one tool for bringing people together. Web 2.0 affects someone that is entering the workforce becasue it will be easier for people to interact with businesses. For example, with the use of webcams, interviews can be conducted over the internet. This is also along the same lines for people that are already in the workforce because people can hold meetings with other clients that are in a different part of the world. When it says that we will have to rethink everything I believe that they hinting that we need to be careful of what the internet evolves to in the future. It is possible that people's privacy can be even more invaded if the internet grows in the direction it is today.

Introduction of myself

Hello everyone, my name is Daniel Kinn and I am from Greenville, NY. Greenville is in the country, about two hours north of NYC. I am a junior here at Clemson studying Professional Golf Management.
For the last six months of my life I have been interning at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. I worked at the on property golf courses and it was a blast. I was able to go into the parks whenever I want for free, and probably had the funnest six months of my life.
Other than golf, I enjoy attending sporting events and live music venues. I also play intramural basketball, volleyball, and football here at Clemson.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to a successful semester in this course.
